If you read my blogs regularly you will know that I talk about balance often. I seem to never get the balance right. I throw myself into one thing head over heels focussing on a mission, and in the process neglecting other really important things and then that makes the whole business fall flat.
So what is this “business” I’m talking about? A few months ago I decided that the job that I had was not what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. So I decided to do a career change and apply for something totally different. It was something that I thought I would enjoy; something that was out of my comfort zone and also something I have never done before so, would be challenge.
Surprisingly, I did get the job and I have given it my 200%, working like a mad person. Getting up early, going to bed late, working, learning… getting this thing right. Everything else just fell to the side. Yet, doing all this didn’t make me perform better and I made mistakes as I became really nervous about being on top, and getting there really fast. After two months of relentless work I had to sit back and realize that I made a mistake. This is not what I thought it would be. I worked really hard, but this is just not my fit. My personal life at that point did not exist anymore and blogging, the thing that I really loved, has also gone off track. I didn’t feel creative and I was bone tired.
It was really hard to admit defeat. But I had a choice to make, should I choose the mentality “throw me to the wolves and I come back leading the pack?” or should I just stop. Admit this was a mistake and make yet another change. I decided to lead the wolves. Do better, be better. Until one week later (yes, only a week) I came home crying, having a meltdown. I had to admit defeat. I failed at this and I knew I would that is why I worked so hard to prove that I wouldn’t. I think that was one of the hardest things I have done in my life, admitting that I failed. The next day, I resigned and took two days off to sulk and lick my wounds.
The third day I replied for work again, but this time I was very selective and wanted to make sure that I choose the right one. I still didn’t know what kind of job I wanted, but I was pretty sure of what I didn’t want. It took me a month and a half and now I have been in my new role for two weeks, and somehow it just fits.
After the long story, finally the point. The other day I found something that made sense to me. Chris Brogan sent me a newsletter saying… there is no such thing as work-life balance… and my first thought was.. come onnn we all know there are, EVERYONE is talking about it. And then as I kept reading he said, your work life, home life, fun life must all be in ALIGNMENT or CONGRUENT. They all have to have the same goal. And there is no balance. Some you will spent more time with, some less. If you like your work life, you can align it with your home life, which will align with your fun life. All aspects of your life, needs to feed into each other. Get your alignment right to work toward a commitment with the right attitude. I learned the hard way that balance is only a circus trick. For now, I’m going to sit back and just enjoy my role at work, my home and friendships. I like this chapter of my life.
