So Lucky!

I have realized how lucky I am today. Today, they demolished the Christchurch Police station that was damaged beyond repair four years ago in an earthquake that flattened my city. It’s a major landmark in my city’s history. In it’s place, it’s planned for a hotel to be build. I work in the building next door to it and when I go to work tomorrow, there will just be a huge hole.

Why am I lucky though? I have lived through so many events that made the history books. I lived in South Africa through apartheid, I was in Cape Town when Nelson Mandela was released from prison, I was living in South Africa when he became president and 10 years after and now, I’m part of the rebuild of a wonderful city after a devastating earthquake.

The past months, I have been catching myself complaining that I just don’t have enough hours in my day. That if I had more free time I would not be Jack of all Trades, Master of None, but actually be a master of something! Then I also realized that when I do have free time, I don’t use it productively, hence not mastering anything anyway. So maybe I must just change my attitude and not look at what still needs to be done as a negative, but as an opportunity to enjoy the ride.

So to this end, I have enrolled in another course to improve my Photoshop skills,  bought more English books to read and lean the language.  I planned three weekends away for the year. Invited more people to my friends lists, RL and SL. Applied for another job and re-looked at my exercise regime. Yoga here I come.. soon I’ll be able to reach my ears with my toes (not sure if I’ll break something) and I’m planning on being a very happy busy bee.. who cares about being a master! I’m going to live my life in the width and have fun along the way.

One of my favourite bloggers/inspirational people is Chris Brogan and when I read this quote I was reminded of something I read when I thought I was not making progress as I wanted too. Chris said if things are not going as you want it too, re-evaluate what you are doing. Make a new goal. I didn’t change my goal, but I decided to change my approach. I decided to make my goal more visual.

His second piece of advice was, help others. I do that indirectly with my blogging. Sure, not in a RL way, but the other day someone on my timeline on Facebook commented that bloggers get angry that they are being “copied” by other people. It made me laugh out loud, because what is the point of being a fashion blogger then? Isn’t it so that you can show people a style for them to go buy the product and wear it too? If I see someone copy me, I feel flattered. Someone actually liked the way I styled enough to want to look exactly like me. It would make me feel so accomplished.  I will always encourage people and help them where I can. Even if it sometimes mean that they turn out to be a more accomplished blogger! I love seeing people happy.

Then his last piece of advice, take action every day! Do something every day to achieve your goal. My goal is huge passion, so this is the easy part. Learning a new skill, looking for something different, looking for inspiration.

So if at first you don’t succeed.. remember, that failure is an event, not a person.

This is the time of year when everyone is reflecting on the events of last year, and the changes they want to make for this year. Well maybe I’m a bit late in doing it. My excuse, I was on holiday and really, really enjoyed it, but as all things in life, holidays end and life has gone back to reality. This means, it’s time to concentrate on today and the new year. Reminiscing about 2013, there were two major lows for me, which I don’t really want to discuss as it’s the past. These lows made me focus on more positive things in my life, one of which were my blog and it went from strength to strength. Thank you so much for all your support guys!

I read the quote above, and realized that even though my blog is doing well at the moment, I need to set sail and try new things with it. I need to learn more techniques photography wise and this year, I really, really want to do more writing. This was my goal for last year too, and looking back, I think I have grown, but mostly in the photography area and not so much in writing.

I’m excited about this year, with all it’s challenges and all the new things I’m about to learn. It’s already a great start! Here’s to 2014!
