That pesky hair bases that won’t match

Hi Everyone!

I have not blogged in so many months. It is really nice to enjoy SL and not having any deadlines. All the new mesh heads, all the awesome new appliers! I can just play around with it all – in my own time. But I do have one issue that has been working on my nerves! I can’t seem to match hair bases or eye brows for that matter. And I keep changing my hair, so it’s an endless struggle.

Then I remembered that years and years ago before mesh…. actually wayyyyyy before mesh, N-core made amazing shoes (they still do) but we had to match the shoe feet skin to our skin ourselves. That was even before appliers. We saw so many stunning avis with pale skin and dark, dark feet LOL! Anyway then someone told me how to match my feet perfectly and I thought I might give it a try with my hair bases. So I went to look if Firestorm still had the same settings after all the updates. If you use firestorm and a Catwa head and are interested below is how you do it.

1. I suggest you set your windlight setting to Midday (Ctr + Shift + Y) or my personal preference – Nam’s Optimal Skin and prim windlight.

2. For optimal tinting I also suggest you deactivate your Nearby/Local lights and projectors setup. This is easily done by going to Preferences (Ctr + P) , then click on your “Graphics” tab, un-tick “local lights”, “Basic shaders” and “Atmospheric shaders”.

2. Ensure that your Advanced tab (Ctr + Alt + D) and  Developer tab (Ctr + Alt + Q) are activated.

The next bit is for Firestorm, but if you are on a different viewer, just look around in the Develop tab, there should be similar options.

3. Click on the Develop Tab, and choose “Show Info” from the menu, then click “Show color under cursor”.

You will notice that you have numbers at the bottom right of your screen. Hover over anything with your mouse, and the colors RGB numbers will show. Hover over the color you want to copy and make a note of the RGB numbers at the bottom right.

4. Open your Catwa main hud.

5. Go to the Alpha, Lashes, Tint, Neck-size tab, click on the little mouse as the picture below. You will get a pop-up, add the numbers, separated with commas, then click submit.

6. Then click on the hair base or lash icon and then on the color under the color range. Your hair base or eyebrows will change to the color your picked. You can also save the color. It is always good to start with a white base. Also you may have to play around with the blend modes a bit.

Below a picture of how it looks after I changed my hair base. It is a raw screenshot. I have not done any editing to it. If you have any trouble, just let me know, but please keep in mind, I’m not inworld often and I’m not checking WordPress that often anymore either. Sorry! that is why I have not blogged in ages!

Tutorial: How to make your avatar pop

This is my first tutorial in Photoshop and I’m actually a bit nervous. I’m not doing it in a video, but if you have any questions, please feel free to leave a comment.

From years of fashion blogging I liked to make my avatar stand out when I take a picture but I got really bored with the same wall background. But sometimes my avatar just blended into a more busier one and you never really notice her fashion. Sooo if you have the same problem. I have a really subtle but effective way to make it pop.

The picture below is not totally raw, I have already liquified the parts that was a bit jaggard and blended the neck where there was a bit of a line.

 Tutorial 5

1. Firstly, duplicate your layer. (CTR + J).

Tutorial 1

2. Change your layer mode to “Vivid Light”. This should make your picture really dark.

Tutorial 2

3.Then go to Filter > Other >High Pass. Play around with the Radius slider. This will make your image much more defined. Take care not to make the radius too high, since it’s a second life picture, it is already a cartoon and if it’s too high it may appear cartoonish. We don’t want it to be too strong. In my case I decided on 1.8. Three is about the maximum I normally go. The trick is to just define it, so if you turn off the layer, by clicking on the eye icon, you can see the difference.

Tutorial 3

4. Then click on Alt and your layer mask button.

Tutorial 4

5. Use your paint brush tool to paint the color white over the parts you want to highlight in the image. In this case I’m painting over the eyes of my avatar and the sides of her nose as well as her arms and stomach parts. Again this is really just a very subtle way of drawing attention to the part of the picture which you want to be a bit brighter. If you turn the layer off and on, you will see that it is just a little brighter, subtle but enough for it to stand out. Suddenly, when you look at the picture for the first time, you don’t see the back ground first.

You can play around with it until it’s to your liking. I just find this is a really soft (?) way of doing it and to still looks natural.

Below is the final picture. I added my signature and a border.

What’s your RGB number?

Do you hate matching your skin to your shoes? Well, you need to read on as I’m going to make your day. Gos and N-core has made it so easy to match our skin these days, it’s the only brands that we want to wear because of this and lucky for us their shoe range are amazing, so it’s not a chore. But what if you have this stunning skin that you are just in love with and it is not in their hud system? Or want to wear another designer shoe (cos face it, there are really great designers out there)? It’s pretty easy actually. Someone told me about this a long time ago, but I was reminded of it a few weeks ago after I asked a skin creator for RGB numbers. These are the easy steps:

What's your RGB number?

You will notice that you have numbers at the bottom right of your screen. Hover over anything with your mouse, and the colors RGB numbers will show.  Just add your leg RGB numbers to your shoe hud and viola, you will have an exact or at least very close match to your skin. Please note, that different windlights will influence this, also when you add your RGB numbers, start with a white pallet on your hud.

To deactivate this, just go back to the Develop tab -> Show info  and untick “Show color under cursor”.

Since I’m talking about shoes, N-Core has just released this awesome pair of heels. I used the above method to match my skin. I’m very pleased with the results.

And as a bonus, the top I’m wearing is from Somnia, and its free! Somnia is participating in the Autumn Effect hunt, so go and get yours!
